Snow newbie needs help

(1/3) > >>

Tuttsy:
I am taking my husband and 3 boys (13, 14, 15) to Thredbo for our first taste of snow.
We are staying at the Mowamba apartments for 1 week.
Any advice about the following topics would be greatly appreciated.
Where to eat (on a budget)
What clothing to bring (we are renting parka and pant)
We have purchased 5 day lift and lesson passes, can the boys learn to ski and snowboard using these?
We are driving....where should we rent/buy chains from?
Anything else you think we need to know
Thanks

hi tuttsy and welcome to the zone.

firsty i will ask what date's  are you go july, august?
i'm going to thredbo and if i go before you i will give you all the goss .i have not been to thredbo for i few years so i not sure on where to get cheap food.

but i will help out as much as i can ,just keep asking the question even if you think its a dumb question do worry we will help out .

firstly its going to cost you alot of money ,but you will love it  ,and you might think its going to cost $2000 or so ,but i wont it will cost you $20,000
because once you kids ski or board they will want to go every year.lol.

i would hire all your gear on the mountain ,like parkes and pants and skis or boards, because if the skis brake or the boots are to small you can change them in 5minutes on the mountain ,and you will get them cheaper with a clothes and skis package .
all you need to take TO SKI is beanie's and long socks, glasses and gloves you can hire the rest.
plus take warm clothes for walking around when your no skiing.

lift tickets you have they are 5 days of 2hr lesson's in a group, that meens at around 9am the boys will have lesson every day for 2hrs and then they can ski or board thredbo after the lesson and practic what they have been told ,they can ski all the mountain on that ticket ,when they get good at it.

as for chains you can hire them in jindy just before you drive up to thredbo .around $40 dollars for the week.

Tuttsy:
Thanks so much for your reply.
Shall not bother to carry chains before Jindabyne now.
We are going 29 June - 4 July.
We are renting gear on mountain for the reasons you mentioned.
Do you wear any other clothes under parka and pants besides socks. I was led to believe you should be layering ?
We have pre booked the lifts and lessons. Can the boys chose to join the 2 hour group ski lessons one day and the group board lesson the next ?
Thanks for letting me ask the dumb ones ...

addicted:
hi mate, welcome to the ZonE ;D
If its nasty and cold up there then layering is the go! but if youve got nice weather then dont be afraid to dress down cause it can be pretty warm while skiing!
I dont think itll be a prob to change lessons from ski to board, and dont worry about the boys picking it up, most kids their age are carving after the FIRST day ;) ;D

sleddog:
with the 2 hr lesson all you have to do is book the day before ,you can ski one day and board the ski is up to you.
only problem is you will have to hire ski's one day and board the next it will cost more BUT if you ask them at the start of the week this is what you want to do ,they may let you for the one price.
i have done this with my freind when they started ski/boarding.

with the ski gear parkers and pants i dont wear track suits under my pant they are ski pants with
cotton liner ,and just a sweat jumper under my jacket and T shirt.
not to sure with the hire gear i have not hired since i was 5 that was 27 years ago.LOL.

but if they are like the older style you wear tracks suits under you parker and pants, and i'm sure the boys have tracky's anyway.
but you will have to buy gloves and sunnys and beanies thats about it, you can hire the rest.

you will be there before i go.
are you staying in a unit or a lodge.
unit-- take you own food ALL meals.
lodge-- you will have to buy lunch it's about $10 each.

do dumb questions so far so keep asking it's no problem.

sled. :wavey:
